EEBLab1

Step inside EEBLab1 — an experimental smart building platform of the EEB Living Lab. Drag to look around, and use the scene controls to move through the tour.

CHARACTERISTICS

EEBLab1 has been deployed as an experimental smart building platform for developing and validating advanced energy management strategies. The platform is connected to the electrical grid and incorporates inverter-based power conversion and battery energy storage systems to ensure reliable operation and support renewable energy integration. The platform includes two interconnected nano-grid prototypes designed to investigate local energy management and peer-to-peer energy sharing: Nano-grid 1, which is equipped with a solar photovoltaic (PV) system and Nano-grid 2, equipped with a solar photovoltaic system, a small wind turbine, and a battery energy storage system for storing surplus renewable energy.

SCENARIOS

Several experimental scenarios have been implemented and validated, including:

  • Real-time power consumption monitoring of electrical loads.
  • Intelligent HVAC control, including ventilation, heating, and air-conditioning optimization based on real-time environmental conditions.
  • Geothermal system monitoring to assess thermal energy performance and operational efficiency.
  • Internal and external temperature monitoring for thermal envelope characterization and validation, supporting the development of a digital twin of the building for energy analysis, simulation, and predictive control.
  • Occupancy prediction using indoor CO₂ concentration measurements to enable occupancy-aware ventilation control.
  • Local energy management and peer-to-peer energy sharing between Nano-grid 1 and Nano-grid 2 to optimize renewable energy utilization, battery storage, and load balancing.
